Have sex, be healthy

If the mere thought of finals week induces a pounding headache, the perfect solution could be one that you may find a little unconventional – spend an evening with your significant other in the bedroom.

That’s right. According to sex therapist Joy Davidson, sex is a natural pain reliever that is a great alternative to swallowing some Advil. Despite the many risks associated with sex including STD’s and pregnancy, there’s a greater side to sex that provides some astounding health benefits.

Not only does it act as a pain reliever, but sex can also lower stress levels. College students are no stranger to stress, as they strive to juggle school, work, family and friends. Simply having more sex could alleviate such a hectic lifestyle.

“Having sex releases endorphins. It makes you feel better and combats stress,” said WVU Honors student, Mac Clarkson.

Cold and flu germs are found all over college campuses, and such illnesses are spread from student to student faster than you can say “bless you.” Good news, though, the chances of becoming sick can be greatly reduced by enjoying sex with your boyfriend or girlfriend. Sex has been proven to boost the immune system as it increases the number of antibodies known as immunoglobulin A. Just start each morning with a glass of orange juice and rejuvenating sex and become a healthier you.

As you may have guessed, sex is also a great workout. If the weather is bad or you simply don’t want to leave your house to swim or lift weights at the student recreation center, ask your partner to burn some calories the fun way. Studies show that thirty minutes of sex can burn 85 calories. Lee Casto, Clarkson’s girlfriend, says she would prefer some alone time with Mac to riding a stationary bike for miles upon miles any day.

Working out close to bedtime can cause many to face difficulty sleeping. Not only is sex an enjoyable way to exercise, but it actually promotes better sleep. A chemical released during orgasm, oxytocin, is linked to improved sleep, a perfect excuse to cuddle up with your partner after a long day of tests and a long night of fun.

Finally, a healthy sex life can enhance self -esteem. Sex creates a loving environment that generally makes a person feel good about his or herself. This makes for a healthy relationship and an improved outlook on life.

Remember, though, these benefits can only be reaped by practicing safe sex. Trust your partner and use condoms and/or birth control. Once that’s under control, make like rabbits and enjoy the results!
